WHO ORGANISES SCREENINGS AND HOW FREE IS PARTICIPATION?

Everyone can request a screening from a doctor or carry out a self test on their own initiative. But usually people only have a screening when this screening is offered. Those taking the initiative are generally care providers, such as GPs or specialists, commercial companies, employers or public bodies. The Flemish government offers a variety of screenings via six population screenings.

If a screening is offered, how free are you to take part or not?

Free choice is a generally accepted principle here. You are never obliged to take part in a screening.

In the screenings (population screenings) offered by the government, the advantages and disadvantages have been assessed as being favourable for the average target group. But you, as an individual, may decide otherwise. This assessment is not always made for other screenings. So make sure you are well informed about the advantages and disadvantages of the screening before you decide to go ahead and consult your doctor if you still have questions.
